OM UNIT a.k.a. Jim Coles is a Bristol UK-based producer and DJ, known for his work in deep low-end bass genres like dub, dubstep, and drum 'n' bass. Originally producing jungle as a teenager in the 1990s, he then turned to turntablism under the name 2tall and released several albums under this moniker in the 2000s. It wasn't until 2009 that the Om Unit alias came about with his debut release on a compilation for Fabric entitled encoder, which was swiftly followed by a white-label remix of Joker's "Digidesign" and an EP called The Corridor EP on Plastician's label Terrorhythm.

In 2011 he found a home with the record label Civil Music, taking up release and management duties, and releasing three EPs--'The Timps', 'Transport', and 'Aeolian'--followed by his first album, Threads. During this time he released a one-off EP under the alias 'dream continuum' with Machinedrum entitled 'Reworkz'  for Planet Mu. He was also one of the first people to fuse the Chicago footwork style with classic jungle music with a string of three self-released EPs in 2011 under the alias 'Philip D Kick', along with three other EPs later under that alias for the Astrophonica label.

Om Unit started his own label Cosmic Bridge in 2011, through which he's released music from Kromestar, DJ Madd, Boxcutter, TMSV, Graphs, Danny Scrilla, J(ay) A.D. Neuropol, Moresounds and J:Kenzo, along with his own 'Torchlight' series of EP,s and his series of 'Cosmology' compilations featuring exclusive tracks and remixes from artists from the label.

In 2014, Om Unit released his album Inversions on the seminal Metalheadz label, which came about through a creative relationship with Goldie, who let him access original DAT tapes containing samples from his personal archive. He's also released three EPs with fellow Bristolian Sam Binga, the first of which was released on DBridge's Exit Records label.

in 2016 Om Unit was involved with a group album project for Exit titled "Who is Richie Brains?, which featured material from himself, Sam Binga, Alix Perez, Chimpo, Fixate, Fracture, and Stray collaborating over a series of sessions. The next year, he released 'Self' his first Om Unit album on Cosmic Bridge. Since then, he's released album collaborations with the likes of SeekersInternational and Deadbeat.

Starting in 2021, Om Unit released two volumes of his 'Acid Test Studies' albums, along with two 'Version' companion albums, which has exposed him to a much larger audience. The blog Ban Ban Ton Ton described it thusly: These albums are stoned slo-mo scores for imagined future alien worlds. Stripped back, spaced-out, and scientific, in what amounts to a very dread dub techno, pins drop into infinity, in the void between their sounds. Mixing mercurial metallic percussion with sometimes Morricone-esque melodies, the TB-303 is, of course, their focus, as Coles traps the emissions from Roland’s little silver box and sends them spinning in delay.
