Public Universal Friend is an art-rock/americana act out of Indianapolis, fronted by queer, trans singer-songwriter Jody Galadriel Friend. Emerging from a decades-long solo career, the 2021 debut Perennials served as Friend’s “coming out” album—melding Appalachian folk, post-punk, 90s emo, and hymn-like motifs into emotionally raw songwriting. Their 2023 follow-up Chrysalis deepens the exploration of southern gothic themes and trans identity with bold tracks like “Jesus, Pt. 1,” widely embraced as a queer evangelical anthem. PUF has become a cherished figure in the local queer music scene, garnering attention from NPR and other notable outlets.
